Architectural fragment, Leggetsrath, Co. Kilkenny

In the OPW stone store in Kilkenny, sitting among salvaged masonry from across the county, is a small carved head that once formed part of a medieval building at Leggetsrath.

It is a label stop, which is a decorative terminal placed at the end of a받hoodmould, the projecting ridge of stone above a door or window that channels rainwater away from the opening. This particular example measures roughly 17 centimetres wide and 16 centimetres high, barely larger than a human fist, yet the carving is precise and considered. The face is a woman's, framed by a simple headband and a barbette, the band of linen that ran beneath the chin and was fastened above the head, a detail of female dress that appears frequently in 13th-century sculpture and manuscript illustration alike.

The piece is catalogued as KD014 in the Kilkenny depot collection, and stylistically it belongs to the 13th century, a period when Anglo-Norman patronage was reshaping the built landscape of Leinster with new churches, towers, and domestic halls. Label stops from this era range from purely geometric to elaborately figurative, and a woman's head combined with foliage ornament sits at the more accomplished end of that range. There is some spalling around the nose, the kind of minor surface loss that centuries of exposure or rough handling will produce, but the face is otherwise intact. The barbette in particular suggests a sculptor working within a recognisable visual vocabulary, one familiar with contemporary fashions in dress as well as in stonework.

The fragment's connection to Leggetsrath, a townland south of Kilkenny city, raises quiet questions about what stood there and who commissioned it. No building survives to receive it back.
