Armorial plaque (present location), Mannin, Co. Mayo
Co. Mayo |
Estate Features
At Mannin in County Mayo there survives an armorial plaque, a carved stone bearing a coat of arms, displaced at some point from its original setting and now standing in what the record describes only as its present location.
Such objects have a habit of outlasting the buildings they were made to ornament, and a heraldic plaque without its original context raises more questions than it answers: whose arms were these, what structure once displayed them, and how did the stone come to rest where it now sits?
