Fish-pond, Ballinrobe Demesne, Co. Mayo

Within the grounds of Ballinrobe Demesne in County Mayo, there survives a feature that speaks quietly to a particular kind of landed domestic economy: a fish-pond, purpose-built to supply fresh fish to the households of those who owned the surrounding estate.

Such ponds were a common fixture of demesne landscapes in Ireland from the medieval period onwards, functioning as practical larders rather than ornamental water features, though in grander settings the two purposes were seldom kept entirely separate. The fish-pond at Ballinrobe represents a physical remnant of that tradition, an element of the working infrastructure that once supported life on an Irish country estate.
