Barrow (Ditch barrow), Ballynamona, Co. Limerick

A field in Ballynamona, County Limerick holds the remains of a prehistoric burial ground that yielded nothing when archaeologists dug into it.

That outcome, disappointing by the diggers' own admission, is itself a quietly interesting fact about this cluster of low earthen mounds sitting in reclaimed pasture east of a drainage ditch.

The site is one of six ditch barrows, a type of funerary monument consisting of a mound encircled by a surrounding ditch, gathered into a compact cemetery covering an area of roughly 100 metres north to south by 115 metres east to west. A second barrow cemetery lies 200 metres to the west, and an enclosure sits just 15 metres to the east, suggesting this corner of Limerick was once a landscape dense with ceremonial or funerary significance. In 1935, the archaeologist S. P. Ó Ríordáin excavated three of the six barrows in this group, part of a broader campaign that year taking in twenty such monuments across the wider area. His published account from 1936 was candid: the results were, in his own words, "frankly disappointing," as no unmistakable burial was found in any of the barrows examined. The particular barrow covered here lies in the southern part of the field, about 25 metres south-west of one of the other excavated mounds.

For anyone hoping to visit, it is worth knowing in advance that no surface remains are visible on aerial imagery. The land has been absorbed into ordinary pasture, and there is nothing to see at ground level that would distinguish the spot from any other field in this part of Limerick. The value of coming here, if there is one, lies in knowing what the ground contains rather than what it shows. The nearby stream to the west and the townland boundary with Lissard to the north-east serve as the best available reference points for orientation, and the broader concentration of monuments in the surrounding landscape rewards a closer look at the map before any visit.
