Barrow – mound barrow, Mullenmeehan, Co. Westmeath

A small earthen mound barely a metre and a half tall, sitting on the northern flank of a prominent hill in County Westmeath, might not immediately announce itself as something ancient.

But the mound at Mullenmeehan has been accumulating questions for decades, not least about what, precisely, it should be called. That classification matters more than it might seem: a bowl-barrow, the type originally assigned to this site, is a Bronze Age burial monument typically ringed by a fosse, a shallow encircling ditch, whereas a mound-barrow is a simpler form, an earthen heap with no such enclosure. The distinction shapes how the monument is understood, and here the evidence has never quite settled the argument.

The mound is roughly circular, measuring about nine metres across and rising to somewhere between one and a half and two metres in height. When fieldworkers visited in 1971, they noted red earth showing through where the surface had broken down, a scattering of stones, and signs that the lower slopes had been disturbed by both digging and ploughing. A quarry-hole sat to the north. There was no trace of any fosse. A 1977 account described it as very small and gently rounded, again with no surrounding ditch visible. When David McGuinness surveyed the broader area and published his findings in 2014, he concluded that the absence of any fosse in either earlier account made the bowl-barrow classification difficult to sustain, and he reclassified the monument as a mound-barrow. A complication remained: the 2013 survey team was unable to gain access to the site, so the reassessment rested entirely on those earlier descriptions rather than fresh inspection. On the top of the mound, the 1971 account mentions a very slight secondary mound that looked comparatively modern, an unexplained addition sitting on something already old and only partially understood.
