Barrow (Ring Barrow), Ballybricken, Co. Limerick

A burial mound in a field near Ballybricken, County Limerick, might not announce itself to a passing driver, but from the air it becomes something else entirely.

This particular ring barrow, a circular earthen mound typically dating from the Bronze Age and associated with burial or ritual use, was invisible to ground-level survey until a camera caught it from above, tracing its outline in the crop and soil like a slow revelation.

The monument was identified by The Discovery Programme, an Irish research body established to investigate the country's archaeological heritage, using medium-altitude aerial photographs taken in 1986. That photographic survey formed part of a broader regional investigation documented by M. Doody in the 2008 publication The Ballyhoura Hills Project, issued as Monograph No. 7 by the Discovery Programme and published by Wordwell. The record sits under the reference LI023: Bruff 17001: AP 4/3710, placing it within the Bruff area of County Limerick. Aerial photography of this kind works by detecting subtle variations in how crops grow over buried features; a filled ditch or a compacted mound can leave a faint but readable signature in the vegetation above it, visible only at a certain angle and in the right season. It is through this method that the Ballybricken barrow entered the archaeological record at all.

Because this monument was identified from aerial survey rather than excavation or ground investigation, there is currently no formal public access route or visitor infrastructure associated with it. It sits on private land and the visible traces, if any remain at surface level, are likely to be subtle. Those interested in the wider landscape context would benefit from consulting the Ballyhoura Hills Project monograph, which places the barrow within a richer pattern of prehistoric activity across the region. The National Monuments Service record can be located using the reference number above, which provides the most current information on the monument's status and any access considerations.
