Barrow (Ring Barrow), Farna, Co. Kerry

In the townland of Farna in County Kerry, a ring barrow sits in the landscape, quiet and largely unannounced.

A ring barrow is a type of prehistoric funerary monument, typically consisting of a low central mound encircled by a ditch and an outer bank. They are associated broadly with the Bronze Age, though the tradition of burial mounding stretches across millennia in Ireland, and individual examples can be difficult to date without excavation. What makes these monuments quietly arresting is not their scale, which is rarely dramatic, but their persistence: a deliberate mark made on the land by communities who are otherwise almost entirely beyond reach.
