Barrow, Ryves Castle, Co. Limerick

A low circular rise in a County Limerick pasture, roughly twelve metres across, would pass without remark to almost anyone walking past it.

There is no marker, no signage, and no entry on the Ordnance Survey Ireland historic maps to suggest that anything of note lies beneath the grass. Yet aerial photography tells a different story: the outline of an earthwork emerges clearly from above, the kind of raised, roughly circular form that typically signals a much older arrangement of the land, a barrow being a burial mound or funerary monument of prehistoric or early medieval origin, constructed from earth and sometimes stone.

The site sits on demesne land associated with Ryves Castle, a recorded monument located approximately 300 metres to the northwest. Its absence from OSi historic mapping means it escaped the notice of earlier surveyors, and it remained effectively undocumented until aerial reconnaissance caught it. The monument was identified in Digital Globe orthoimagery taken between 2011 and 2013, and is also visible on Google Earth images, as well as on an ASI aerial photograph, reference ASIAP 342/12, taken on 5 January 2003. The record was compiled by Martin Fitzpatrick and uploaded to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland database on 4 August 2021, making this a relatively recent addition to the formal record of Limerick's archaeological landscape.

The earthwork is on private pasture, so access would require the permission of the landowner. For those with an interest in aerial archaeology or landscape survey, the publicly available orthoimagery referenced in the record offers a reasonable view of the feature from above. On the ground, and in the right light conditions, especially in low winter sun or after a frost, the slight but perceptible rise of the circular form becomes more legible. The proximity to Ryves Castle adds context; demesne lands often preserve earlier features simply because they were kept in grass rather than ploughed, which is likely why this particular earthwork survived at all.
