Barrow, Stephenstown, Co. Limerick

There is nothing to see here, and that is precisely the point.

In a field of reclaimed pasture near the Morningstar River in County Limerick, a prehistoric burial monument lies completely invisible at ground level, its circular outline detectable only from the air. No mound breaks the grass, no earthwork catches the eye, and no marker acknowledges what the soil beneath may contain. The place looks, to any passing walker, like ordinary farmland.

What the ground conceals was first recognised not by archaeologists on foot but by a gas company in the air. A Bord Gáis Éireann aerial photograph taken on the 3rd of November 1984, shot at a scale of 1:5,000, revealed the faint cropmark signature of a ring-barrow, one of the circular burial monuments typically dating to the Bronze Age, in which a central burial was enclosed by a surrounding ditch and low bank. The site, catalogued as part of a cluster of up to eleven possible barrows spread across an area roughly 300 metres east to west and 200 metres north to south, sits approximately 460 metres west of the Morningstar River. It was compiled and uploaded to the record by Martin Fitzpatrick in June 2021. Notably, it does not appear on any Ordnance Survey Ireland historic mapping, which suggests it was either levelled before systematic surveying began or simply escaped notice until aerial photography made such features legible.

Subsequent examination of Google Earth orthoimages confirmed that no surface remains are currently visible, meaning a visit to the location offers no obvious focal point. The site lies in reclaimed pasture north of a watercourse, and access would be across private agricultural land, so anyone wishing to seek it out should take care to establish permissions beforehand. The most informative way to engage with this site is through the aerial photograph held in the archaeological record rather than the field itself. That photograph, taken on a November morning forty years ago, caught something that centuries of map-making had missed entirely.
