Boulder-burial, Callow, Co. Mayo

Burial Sites
In a field near Callow in County Mayo, a large natural boulder sits in a relationship with the ground beneath it that is anything but accidental.
Boulder-burials are among the more enigmatic monument types found across Ireland, consisting of a single large stone, often glacially deposited, placed over or directly associated with a burial. Unlike the more familiar portal tombs or wedge tombs, they carry no dramatic architecture, no obvious chamber, and no arrangement that announces itself to a passing eye. That quiet ambiguity is part of what makes them interesting.
