Bullaun stone, Ballynagaul, Co. Limerick

A prehistoric stone with a smooth, bowl-shaped hollow worn into its upper face has ended up doing rather mundane duty as part of a gatepost on a roadside in Ballynagaul, County Limerick.

This is a bullaun stone, a type of early medieval or prehistoric carved rock found across Ireland, typically characterised by one or more cup-like depressions ground into the surface. The precise original purpose of bullauns remains a matter of debate among archaeologists; they have been associated with early Christian sites, used as mortars for grinding, and linked to folk customs involving healing or cursing, depending on the location and local tradition. What makes this particular example quietly remarkable is not its size or setting but its situation: repurposed, incorporated into field infrastructure, and easily passed without a second glance.

The stone itself is roughly triangular in shape, measuring approximately 0.44 metres by 0.32 metres, with a thickness of around 0.15 metres. On its upper surface sits a smooth, roughly circular depression measuring 0.27 metres by 0.28 metres and about 0.06 metres deep. That smoothness is telling; it speaks to repeated use over a long period, whether for grinding, ritual, or both. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in August 2011, forming part of a broader effort to document smaller, less celebrated archaeological features that tend to slip through the gaps of formal survey work.

The stone sits built into a gatepost alongside the road, which means it is visible from the roadside without any need to access private land, though a careful look is required to identify it. There is no signage or formal acknowledgement of its presence. Visitors should look closely at the upper face of the gatepost itself rather than expecting a freestanding monument; the depression, once noticed, is unmistakable. It is the kind of find that rewards slow travel and an eye for what has been absorbed into the ordinary landscape over centuries.
