Bullaun stone, Lickeen, Co. Wicklow

Beneath a thorn tree in Lickeen, Co. Wicklow, a granite boulder lies on its side in the earth, most of it buried, giving almost nothing away.

What little is visible, a few exposed curves of stone, is enough to suggest something deliberate. Two small arcs are discernible at opposite ends of the boulder, the traces of two carved basins facing away from each other. It is one of the more elusive examples of a bullaun stone to be found in the county.

Bullaun stones are boulders into which one or more rounded depressions, or bowls, have been carved, typically associated with early Christian sites, though their origins and precise purposes remain debated. They are found across Ireland, often near church ruins or holy wells, and the water that collects in their basins has long been credited with curative properties in local tradition. The Lickeen example is unusual in having two opposing bowls carved at either end of the same stone, rather than the more common arrangement of a single central basin or several grouped together on one face. The stone is not in its original position; it has been tipped and buried, and sits among other boulders that have similarly been pushed into the ground in the same area. Without excavation, no measurements of the stone or its basins can be taken. The full extent of the carving remains hidden.

The stone is largely obscured and would require considerable disturbance to examine properly, which makes detailed study difficult and means that much about it, its original setting, its date, and the relationship between the two bowls, remains open to interpretation.
