Burial, Bleachgreen, Co. Kilkenny

A bronze spearhead lodged in a human skull is not the sort of discovery that gets forgotten easily, yet the precise spot where it happened has been lost to time.

Somewhere along the road into Kilkenny, near a house called Greenvale in the townland of Bleachgreen, a group of human bones came to light in 1814 when a hill at the back of a garden wall was being levelled. The skull that held the spearhead crumbled away soon after it was exposed to the air, as ancient bone often does, but the objects survived.

What makes this find particularly vivid is that it was recorded in the handwriting of the man who owned the property at the time. Lewis C. Kinchela, the resident of Greenvale House, attached a brief memorandum to the spearhead itself, noting its discovery and the circumstances. The note was preserved alongside the spearhead, a stone hatchet, and a bronze celt, the last being a type of flat or flanged axe-head common to the Bronze Age, all found in the same neighbourhood. An antiquarian account published in the mid-twentieth century brought the memorandum to wider attention, quoting Kinchela's own words directly. Greenvale House appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839 and on the revision of 1945 to 1946, though the name of the house is given only on the larger-scale twenty-five-inch edition. The exact location of the burials remains uncertain, but they appear to have been close to the house and the public road, suggesting the levelled hill was a modest earthwork or mound rather than anything more dramatic, the kind of feature that once dotted the Irish landscape and was routinely cleared as land was improved and gardens were tidied.
