During construction work in the area known as the Gardens, the machine disturbed a burial that had lain undisturbed in the soil, unprotected by any stone cist or wooden coffin, just a pit cut into the ground and a body placed carefully within it.

What the excavation revealed was an extended inhumation, the term used when a body is laid out flat and straight rather than curled into a foetal position, aligned east to west with the skull placed at the western end. This orientation is commonly associated with Christian burial practice, where the dead were positioned to face the rising sun at the resurrection. The skeleton was that of an articulated adult male, meaning the bones were still in their correct anatomical arrangement when found, suggesting relatively undisturbed deposition. Alongside the main burial, a portion of a skull, a long bone, and a few fragments belonging to an adult female were also recovered, hinting that the site may have served as a burial ground for more than one individual. The location is significant: the spot lies approximately twenty metres south of the Black Abbey, a Dominican friary founded in the thirteenth century, and about fifty metres west of the medieval town wall. The proximity to a religious house makes a medieval date for the burial plausible, though the notes do not specify one definitively.
