During archaeological testing ahead of works on the N2 between Monaghan town and Emyvale, excavators uncovered a single oval pit in a low-lying area of gently rolling glacial landscape. It measured roughly two metres by one metre and was barely thirty-five centimetres deep, yet what it contained was immediately distinctive: broken and heat-shattered stone packed into a dark, charcoal-rich soil, the signature fill of a burnt pit.

Features of this type are sometimes associated with fulacht fiadh activity, a term used for ancient burnt mound sites where stone was repeatedly heated and used to boil water, though this pit was recorded in isolation rather than alongside the spreads of discarded burnt stone that typically accompany those larger complexes. The pit at Enagh was completely excavated under licence 12E0068, as documented by R. O'Hara in a report produced for Archer Heritage Planning in 2012. Beyond confirming its dimensions and fill, the record describes it as isolated, which itself sets it slightly apart. A single pit of this kind, without obvious companion features, leaves open the question of what exactly it was for and whether it represents a remnant of something larger since lost to centuries of agriculture in the drumlins.
