Cairn, Aighan, Co. Donegal

In the undulating pasture lands of Aighan, County Donegal, lies a fascinating religious site known locally as the 'Relig', though it's also referred to as 'Bruckless'.

This ancient sacred enclosure forms an oblong area measuring 31.8 metres from northeast to southwest and 21 metres from northwest to southeast, surrounded by a substantial wall 1.65 metres thick. The site sits dramatically with a laneway bordering its southeastern edge whilst the northwestern side runs along the top of a small rock cliff, creating a naturally defended sacred space.

Seven small cairns occupy the northeastern end of the interior, with one particularly noteworthy subcircular cairn standing out at 4.35 metres by 3.2 metres and rising to 1.13 metres in height. Atop this cairn rest several remarkable features: two stone slabs with distinctive U-shaped notches cut into their tops, which according to Patterson's 1870-71 account, once held a dumbbell shaped 'healing stone' when not in use. Most intriguing is a cross-inscribed slab measuring 59cm by 35cm, decorated on both faces with elaborate designs; Face A bears a Greek bar cross with a second cross inside, a central circle, and X designs in each quarter, whilst Face B displays a thin line Greek cross with a central circle on a raised surface.

The site reveals layers of religious use spanning centuries. Along the northwestern cliff face, a D-shaped dressed rock formation juts out to create what's known as St. Conall's bed, a seat-like feature carved into the natural stone. Nearby, St. Conall's holy well is surrounded by a penitential cairn containing a roughly triangular stone with its own U-notch. Patterson also noted that a bullaun or primitive font was removed from the site in the 19th century. In more recent history, this sacred ground served a sorrowful purpose as a burial place for unbaptised children, adding another poignant chapter to this enduring religious landscape.
