Cairn, Carryblagh, Co. Donegal

In Carryblagh, County Donegal, a remarkable pilgrimage site has been quietly accumulating the prayers and hopes of visitors for centuries.

St. Columkille's Well sits at the base of a steep cliff, its waters modernised but still drawing those seeking the saint's blessing. What makes this holy well truly distinctive is the enormous cairn that has grown around it; an oval mound of stones stretching approximately 12 metres north to south and 8 metres east to west, reaching heights of up to 4 metres at its northwestern end.

Each stone in this impressive accumulation represents a pilgrim's visit, a tradition documented as early as 1983 when local historian Ó Muirgheasa recorded the practice. The cairn extends northward from the well itself, though its original form has been somewhat altered by modern interventions. Around 2010, clearance works appear to have added to the cairn's bulk, with spoil from these activities likely contributing to its current size. The site has been tidied in recent years, with pale, brown and white stone chippings now surrounding the cairn, laid on terram matting after the area was cleared.

Archaeological surveys have revealed intriguing details about the site's complexity. A semi-circular structure of unknown purpose was identified to the north of the cairn, adding another layer of mystery to this sacred landscape. The well and its extraordinary stone monument were first systematically documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal in 1983, with updates following a 2011 inspection that provided the precise measurements and observations of the site's current state. This continuing tradition of stone-leaving connects modern visitors with generations of pilgrims who have sought solace at St. Columkille's Well, their collective devotion literally building the landscape one stone at a time.
