Cairn, Lettereeneen, Co. Mayo

On the lower slopes of the Partry Mountains in County Mayo, a low circular mound of stone sits in rough, rush-covered pasture, quietly distinct from the dozens of elongated field clearance heaps scattered across the same hillside.

Most of those are relatively recent agricultural leftovers, the accumulated effort of generations moving stones off working land. This one is different in shape, in structure, and possibly in age by several thousand years.

The mound measures roughly eight metres across and rises to just over a metre at its highest point on the south-western side, where the natural fall of the ground causes it to slump more broadly. Its profile is gently domed with a slightly flattened top, and the stones visible through the sod cover are granite and gneiss, both native to the local geology. What gives the site particular weight is its proximity to a stone row, a prehistoric monument type consisting of two or more standing stones set in a line, which lies only 4.8 metres to the north. The association between cairns and stone rows is well attested in the Irish prehistoric record, and that relationship is the strongest indication that this mound may date to prehistory rather than to post-medieval land clearance. Reinforcing that reading, a second stone row and a ringbarrow, a low circular earthwork of the kind typically associated with Bronze Age burial, sit on a rise roughly 300 metres to the east-north-east, suggesting this corner of the Partry Mountains once held a meaningful concentration of ceremonial or funerary monuments. The whole area looks westward over the shore of Lough Mask, with the ridgeline of Maumtrasna Mountain running along the southern skyline.
