Thirty metres north of the summit of Hungry Hill, a prehistoric cairn is slowly emerging from the bog that has preserved it for millennia.

Peat erosion has stripped away the northwest portion of the covering, leaving exposed stone that was never meant to be seen this way, not by design but by the gradual retreat of the ground itself. What appears is only partial: a circular mound roughly five metres across and just under a metre high, half-revealed, half-buried, caught in a state of slow disclosure.

A cairn of this type is essentially a deliberate heap of stones, usually raised over a burial or as a territorial or ritual marker during the Bronze Age or earlier. Here, the erosion has done something archaeologically useful despite its destructive character. As material from the northwest half has spilled downslope onto exposed clay, it has uncovered the original kerbing, the ring of larger stones that once defined the outer edge of the monument, running along the west to northeast arc. The southeast portion of the cairn survives in better condition and retains a variety of stone slabs, suggesting the internal structure has not been entirely disturbed. The bog itself, though retreating in places, still covers the southeast to south-southwest section to a depth of around 0.8 metres, acting as both preserver and concealer.

Hungry Hill, rising above the Beara Peninsula, is rough terrain even in good conditions, and the immediate surroundings of the cairn are boggy mountain pasture. The monument sits just off the highest point, in ground that shifts underfoot and offers little shelter. Anyone making their way up here should expect the landscape to be wet and the cairn itself to look, at first glance, more like a natural scatter of stone than anything constructed. The exposed kerbing along the western arc is the clearest indication that what lies here was placed with intention.
