Catholic Church and Altar (in ruins), Skecoor, Co. Galway

A slight rise in a Galway field, a hollow in the ground, and a few courses of rough stonework along one edge: this is what remains of a place where people once gathered to practise their faith in secret.

The site at Skecoor sits on a low hummock in gently undulating grassland, and the depression that marks the chapel's footprint, roughly thirteen metres east to west and eight metres north to south, is now the most legible thing about it. A short stretch of wall, just over three metres long and half a metre high, built from small irregularly cut stones, runs along the western side of that hollow. It may or may not be original fabric. The altar that once accompanied the chapel has left no visible trace at all.

The 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded the building clearly enough, naming it 'R.C. Chapel & Altar' and showing an L-shaped structure aligned roughly north to south, with a shorter wing extending westward from the southern end. By that point the building was presumably still recognisable, if not necessarily in use. The landowner's account identifies it as a penal chapel, which places its origins in the era of the Penal Laws, the body of legislation that, from the late seventeenth century onward, severely restricted Catholic worship in Ireland. Penal chapels were typically simple, often temporary structures, built without permanence in mind and frequently sited in inconspicuous locations precisely because conspicuousness carried risk. The combination of a chapel with a dedicated outdoor altar is consistent with this context; mass was sometimes celebrated in the open air, at a flat stone set apart from any roofed building, when no safer arrangement was possible. That the altar has vanished entirely while even a fragment of wall survives says something about the relative durability of built versus unbuilt forms of commemoration.
