Site of Lisheennora Castle, Graveshill,Somerset, Co. Galway

In the southeastern corner of an ancient enclosure in Graveshill, Somerset, County Galway, lies what was once the site of Lisheennora Castle.

Today, visitors searching for the fortress will find no visible traces above ground; the castle has completely vanished from the landscape, leaving only its memory preserved in historical records. The site appears on old Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, marking where the structure once stood, though time and the elements have erased all physical evidence of its existence.

The castle's location within an existing enclosure suggests it may have been built to take advantage of earlier defensive earthworks, a common practice in medieval Ireland where builders often repurposed prehistoric or early Christian sites for their own fortifications. The enclosure itself, catalogued as GA099-109002 by archaeological surveyors, remains visible, providing the only tangible link to this lost piece of Galway's medieval heritage.

While the absence of any standing remains might disappoint castle hunters, the site represents a fascinating aspect of Irish archaeology; the countless structures that have been swallowed by the landscape over centuries. The documentation by the Galway Archaeological Survey at University College Galway ensures that even though Lisheennora Castle has physically disappeared, its place in the historical record remains secure, offering researchers and history enthusiasts a glimpse into the area's medieval past when such fortifications dotted the countryside.
