Causeway, Lannagh, Co. Mayo

At Lannagh, a townland in County Mayo, there survives a structure recorded simply as a causeway, a designation that raises more questions than it answers.

Causeways of this kind, raised or reinforced pathways built to cross boggy, marshy, or seasonally flooded ground, appear throughout the Irish landscape in contexts ranging from the early medieval period to the nineteenth century. Some were constructed from timber laid across soft ground; others were built up with stone and compacted earth. The fact that this one has been noted and mapped as a distinct archaeological monument suggests it is considered something older or more significant than a routine agricultural track.
