Ceremonial enclosure, Knightswood, Co. Westmeath

On the south-eastern face of a high ridge in the hilly grasslands of County Westmeath, there is a circular earthwork roughly sixty-one metres across that most people would walk straight past without a second glance.

What little survives, a shallow internal fosse and a poorly preserved earthen bank, offers only a faint impression of what was once a substantial monument. A ceremonial enclosure of this kind, sometimes called a henge-type site, would originally have defined a significant ritual or assembly space, the fosse dug on the inside of the bank rather than outside, which is one of the features that distinguishes it from a defensive ringfort. The slight raising of the interior ground and the possible entrance gap oriented to the east-north-east are consistent with deliberate, formal design.

The site sits within a wider landscape that clearly supported activity over a long period. A ringfort, the remains of an enclosed farmstead typical of early medieval Ireland, lies roughly 250 metres to the north-west, suggesting the ridge was a place people returned to across different eras. Whatever ceremonial function this enclosure once served, much of the physical evidence was lost in the 1960s, when the site was almost completely levelled. It is a fate that befell a great number of Irish earthworks during decades of agricultural intensification, when ancient earthworks were cleared to improve pasture or ease the movement of machinery. A field fence running north-east to south-west now cuts across the monument at its north-western edge, further obscuring its original outline. An aerial photograph from November 2011 shows the site clearly enough from above, where the circular cropmark or ground-tone difference reads more legibly than it ever could at ground level.
