Chesterfield, Cloonineen, Co. Galway

In the townland of Cloonineen in County Galway, there is a place recorded on the archaeological map under the name Chesterfield, a name that sits oddly against the quietly rural landscape of the west of Ireland.
The name itself carries a whiff of English aristocratic fashion, the kind of designation that cropped up across the island during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when landlords and improvers named their estates after English towns or English titles, sometimes out of aspiration, sometimes out of sentiment, and sometimes simply because it was the done thing.
