Children’s burial ground, Lack, Co. Kerry

A low, stony platform in a field near Castlemaine Harbour marks one of those quietly melancholy corners of the Irish landscape that most people pass without noticing.

Known locally as Calluragh Graveyard or An Cheallúnach, this is a children's burial ground, a type of site once found across Ireland where unbaptised infants were interred apart from consecrated ground. The Catholic Church's long-standing prohibition on burying the unbaptised in parish cemeteries meant that families turned instead to liminal places, old ruins, field boundaries, and early medieval enclosures, to lay their children to rest. Here, that place is a roughly rectangular raised platform measuring just over twelve metres east to west and thirteen metres north to south, rising no more than forty centimetres above the surrounding ground. The grave markers, where they survive, are small upright stones averaging around twenty-five centimetres high; modest, uncut, easy to miss.

The site sits near the eastern bank of a small river, roughly three hundred to three hundred and fifty metres from the northern shore of Castlemaine Harbour, in the area known as Lack in County Kerry. The field itself, or possibly the site within it, carries the Irish name An Teampaillín, meaning the little church or chapel, a name recorded by the scholar An Seabhac in 1939. That name is significant. Across Ireland, such diminutive place names often point to the ghost of an early Christian site, a small oratory or enclosure long since vanished, whose sacred associations lingered in local memory long after the structure itself had disappeared. Whether any such building ever stood here is not recorded, but the name alone suggests that people understood this ground as something set apart, worthy of a kind of reverence even outside the formal structures of parish life.
