Children’s burial ground, Lisbabe, Co. Kerry

The name says almost everything.

A rath near Lisbabe in County Kerry is known locally as Lisbaby, or the baby fort, a name that preserves the memory of the unbaptised infants once buried within its earthen banks. These sites, known in Irish tradition as cillíní, were the quiet recourse of families whose newborns had died before baptism and were therefore excluded from consecrated ground by church law. The grief was practical as well as theological: a place had to be found, and old earthworks, boundary ditches, and prehistoric enclosures often served that purpose.

The rath itself is a ringfort, a roughly circular enclosure of raised earth dating to the early medieval period and once used as a defended farmstead. The children's burials were placed in its south-western quadrant, and a Schools Manuscript entry from the 1940s records the oral tradition that it was the interment of unbaptised babies long ago that gave the place its enduring name. By the time Dennehy examined the site in 1997, the disturbance caused by farm machinery had erased any physical evidence of the burials, even though earlier accounts had placed them at the centre of the enclosure. Dennehy noted that the ground had not been used for burial in at least a century. Today, the south-western quadrant holds only some low humps and hollows and a loose scatter of stones, nothing that would read as a graveyard to an unprepared eye. The same quadrant also contains what may be a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber of the kind sometimes found within raths, though this too leaves little trace above ground.
