Burial Sites
In the limestone karst of the Burren in County Clare, a cist burial at Parknabinnia represents one of the quieter forms of prehistoric remembrance.
A cist is essentially a small stone-lined box grave, typically just large enough to hold a crouched or contracted human body, and sometimes a few objects placed alongside the dead. Cut into the earth or built just above it and covered with a capstone, these graves are easy to miss entirely, their presence betrayed only by a scatter of flat slabs or a slight disturbance in the ground.
