Corn Mill, Church Town, Co. Donegal

The wheel is the thing worth noting here: mill machinery of this kind was routinely stripped for scrap or salvage once a mill fell out of use, so its survival, however weathered, gives this site a claim on the landscape that plainer ruins cannot make.

The mill dates to around 1830, built as a detached two-bay structure with a natural slate roof and a stone eaves course, later extended by two bays to the north-east under a plainer brick eaves line. Square-headed windows with rubble lintels and red brick segmental arches, some now blocked, sit alongside a timber matchboard door, details that mark it out as a working building rather than a domestic one. It did not stand alone. Immediately to the north-east is a smaller structure with a corrugated roof and rough concrete-block repairs to its stone walls, while to the north stands a two-storey building over a basement, roofed in artificial slate, with yellow brick window reveals and an iron door set beneath a lintel made from a reused railway track, a small sign of the improvisation that kept rural industrial sites running long after their original fittings wore out. To the east, an outbuilding with a single-pitch roof incorporates the rubble walls of a former kiln, the structure once used to dry grain before milling, its stone fabric absorbed into a later, plainer building. A mill race, the channel that carried water to drive the wheel, runs along the south side of the complex, the clearest surviving link between the buildings and the water power that justified their existence.

Taken together, the group reads as a working landscape rather than a single monument: mill, kiln, ancillary stores and the race that fed them, all now disused and folded into vegetation. The condition is poor, and much of the site has been overtaken by growth, but the layout remains legible enough to trace how grain moved through the complex, from kiln to mill to storage, powered by water drawn along the race at the south end.
