Country houses of this type were once the administrative and social centres of rural Irish estates, their fates shaped by the upheavals of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from the Land Acts that dismantled the landlord system to the destruction and abandonment that followed independence. Many were burned, many simply fell into disrepair once the economic logic that sustained them disappeared entirely.
