Crannog, Black Island, Co. Monaghan

What looks like a small island sitting quietly in the south-western reaches of Inner Lough in County Monaghan is, on closer inspection, something considerably older and stranger than ordinary topography.

The feature known as Black Island is not quite a natural island and not quite an artificial one. At its northern end sits an overgrown cairn, roughly fourteen metres across and rising about 1.2 metres above the waterline, perched on a natural ridge that extends some twenty-two metres from north-west to south-east. A crannog, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a man-made or partially man-made island dwelling, typically built out into a lake using timber, stone, and compacted earth, and used as a defended homestead across many centuries of Irish prehistory and early medieval life. Black Island blurs that definition: the ridge beneath is natural, but the cairn atop it suggests deliberate human modification, a built-up mound of stone that would have raised the usable surface further above the water.

The site appears on both the 1834 and 1907 editions of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, marked simply as a small island, with no annotation to suggest its archaeological character. It sits roughly 430 metres from the south-western end of the lough, with deep water dropping away immediately to the west and north of the ridge, which would have made any uninvited approach from those directions difficult and easily monitored. No structural features remain visible today, but animal bones have been noted on the surface, the kind of detail that quietly suggests domestic occupation at some point, meals eaten, animals kept or slaughtered, ordinary life conducted on an extraordinary platform in the middle of a lake.
