Cross-inscribed stone, Largan Beg, Co. Mayo

In the children's burial ground at Largan Beg in County Mayo, there may or may not still exist a stone bearing crudely incised crosses.

The uncertainty is not rhetorical. When inspectors visited the site in 1996, they could not find it. It had been placed, according to earlier records, on a rough stone-built altar near the north-north-west end of the burial ground, and its absence raises the quiet question that haunts many such objects: lost, moved, buried, or simply overlooked?

The stone was first formally noted by Aldridge in 1969, who described it as a natural square stone with crude superimposed crosses cut into its surface. The setting matters as much as the object itself. Children's burial grounds, known in Irish as cilliní, were used from medieval times through to the twentieth century for the interment of unbaptised infants, who were excluded from consecrated ground under Catholic ecclesiastical practice. These liminal spaces, neither fully sacred nor fully secular, were often sited at ancient or marginal locations, and they frequently accumulated objects of local devotional significance. A rough altar bearing a cross-marked stone fits that pattern well, suggesting a community maintaining some form of religious observance at a place that official religion had placed outside its boundaries.

What Aldridge recorded in 1969 was already spare in its detail, the crosses described only as crude and superimposed, meaning one cut across or over another. Whether the stone predates the burial ground's use as a cillín, or was brought there as part of that tradition, is not known. Its current whereabouts are equally uncertain. The 1996 inspection found nothing, and no subsequent relocation appears to have been recorded.
