The feature, roughly 60 metres north to south and 46 metres east to west, exists in the documentary and photographic record, yet leaves no impression on the ground beneath your feet. It is the kind of thing that rewards looking up rather than looking around.

The tree-ring appears on the 1946 to 1947 revision of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map, where it is marked as a deliberate oval planting within the designed landscape of the demesne, the ornamental grounds typically laid out around an Irish country house to project a sense of order and aesthetic intention onto the surrounding land. By the time an aerial photograph was taken on 10 July 1973, as part of the Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography (reference CUCAP BOD019), the trees themselves had apparently gone, but their former presence had left a cropmark, a subtle variation in the colour and growth of grass or crops that betrays buried disturbance in the soil below. Cropmarks of this kind are often the only surviving trace of features that have vanished from the surface entirely, and they tend to show up best in dry summers when stressed vegetation reveals the ghost of what once grew there.

Because the feature is not visible at ground level, a visit to the site would not yield much to the naked eye. What remains is essentially a cartographic and photographic record of something that was once a considered piece of landscape design, now legible only from above or on paper.
