Designed landscape – tree-ring, Sheastown, Co. Kilkenny

On the grounds of Sheastown Lodge in County Kilkenny, a roughly oval ring of trees sits in the landscape with a deliberate geometry that has nothing accidental about it.

This kind of designed tree-ring was a feature of estate landscaping in Ireland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, used to ornament parkland, screen utilitarian corners, or simply signal that the land around a house had been shaped by intention rather than left to chance. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is the evidence for how it changed over time, growing from a modest sub-oval planting of roughly 33 metres by 36 metres into a larger oval, closer to 40 metres by 60 metres, and eventually becoming absorbed into a more extensive plantation spreading out to the north-west.

The earliest cartographic record of the ring appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839, which captured the Irish landscape in exceptional detail during the decades before the Famine. By the time the revised OS map was produced between 1899 and 1903, the planting had expanded noticeably, suggesting either that the original trees had spread or that the estate management had extended the scheme outward. The lodge and its grounds also contain several other irregularly shaped plantations scattered across the property, including a second semi-oval grouping located approximately 90 metres to the south-south-east, hinting at a broader, coordinated approach to the shaping of the landscape rather than a single isolated gesture.
