Earthwork, Kiltoom, Co. Westmeath

On the western face of a hill above Lough Derravarragh in County Westmeath, there is an enclosure that no longer exists in any visible sense, yet refuses to disappear entirely.

Levelled at some point and absorbed into the surrounding pasture, it survives now only as a very faint crop mark, caught on aerial photography taken in November 2011. Crop marks appear when buried or disturbed ground causes vegetation above it to grow differently, offering a ghostly outline of structures that have otherwise vanished from the surface. In this case, the mark traces what was once an oval enclosure roughly 40 metres across north to south and 35 metres east to west, bounded by two widely spaced banks.

The 1911 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded the site while it was still legible on the ground, showing the double-banked oval clearly enough to be plotted. By the time aerial surveys became routine, the earthwork had been flattened, though the hill's natural terrace on which it sat preserved just enough contrast in the soil to register from above. The site's relationship to Lough Derravarragh is worth pausing over. Today the lake lies about 140 metres to the south-west, but drainage works have altered the shoreline considerably; before those interventions, the enclosure would have sat just 50 metres from the water's edge. That proximity places it in company with a crannog, an artificial or partly artificial island dwelling, located 160 metres to the south-west, and a second earthwork 160 metres to the north-west. The clustering of these features along what was once a more immediate lakeside suggests a landscape that was, at some point, deliberately and densely organised around the water.
