Enclosure, Ballygarrane, Co. Tipperary

On a south-facing slope just below the crest of a low hill in County Tipperary, a circular enclosure of roughly sixty to seventy metres across has been almost entirely erased from the landscape.

Almost, but not quite. What was clearly recorded on the first Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840, sitting within a small tree plantation, had vanished from the revised edition by 1906, presumably levelled in the intervening decades of agricultural improvement. Yet the ground still holds its memory.

Enclosures of this type are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, typically interpreted as the remains of early medieval ringforts, though some may be prehistoric in origin. They were defined by a raised bank and, often, an outer ditch or fosse, enclosing a farmstead or settlement. At Ballygarrane, the western quadrant still carries a low scarp, roughly thirty-five centimetres high, and the northeast retains a flattened bank. The most legible section survives in the southeast, where a more pronounced scarp rises to one and a half metres, and a possible outer fosse some three and a half metres wide can still be traced. More intriguingly, the earthen boundary of the townland itself appears to curve in response to the enclosure's outline, a curving kink in the boundary that suggests the old monument was already a fixture in the landscape when that boundary was first drawn, and that later fieldwork simply incorporated it rather than removed it entirely. These kinds of coincidences between ancient enclosures and later administrative boundaries are not unusual in Ireland, where property lines and parish edges often preserve the ghost-shapes of much earlier organisation of the land.
