Enclosure, Ballyknockane, Co. Tipperary

On the southern slopes of Slievenamon, a field boundary takes an odd little kink.

To a passing eye it means nothing, but that subtle curve in the hedgerow is likely the last legible trace of an enclosure that was already gone before the twentieth century began. The earthwork itself has vanished entirely, levelled at some point between 1840 and the early 1900s, leaving only rough pasture thick with thistles and nettles where the monument once stood.

The 1840 edition of the first Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it clearly: a roughly D-shaped enclosure, approximately 37 metres north to south and 44 metres east to west, sitting on a south-facing slope of undulating ground. Enclosures of this general type are found widely across Ireland, often interpreted as early medieval farmsteads or settlement sites, though without excavation it is impossible to say more about the particular history of this one. What can be said is that it was substantial enough to be carefully mapped, and that by the time the surveyors returned for the 1901 to 1905 revision, it had been erased. The field boundaries to the north and west survive intact, and the slight deviation in the northern boundary, following what would have been the curving north-eastern quadrant of the earthwork, suggests that the enclosure quietly shaped the landscape around it even after it ceased to exist as a visible structure.
