Enclosure, Ballynomasna, Co. Tipperary

Beneath a lush meadow in Ballynomasna, County Tipperary, a circular enclosure lies completely out of sight.

There is no earthwork to spot from the road, no stony outline catching the afternoon light, no hollow in the ground to prompt curiosity. The only evidence that anything is there at all came from the air.

An aerial photograph taken in August 1996 revealed the enclosure as a cropmark, a phenomenon in which buried features, walls, ditches, or filled pits affect how vegetation grows above them, producing variations in colour and height that are invisible at ground level but legible from above. In this case, the cropmark takes a circular form, sitting on a natural rise in what the aerial record describes as very undulating terrain sloping to the south-west. Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common monument types in the Irish landscape; they range from prehistoric ring ditches to early medieval ringforts, the latter being farmstead enclosures whose banks and ditches defined a household's boundary and offered some protection for livestock. Whether this particular site belongs to one tradition or another cannot be said from the cropmark alone.

For anyone visiting the area, there is genuinely nothing to see at ground level. The meadow gives no indication of what lies beneath it. The interest here, perhaps, is precisely that absence, the reminder that the Irish landscape holds a great deal more than its surface suggests.
