A rectangular enclosure once occupied this hillside, measuring roughly 27 metres north-east to south-west and 54 metres north-west to south-east, yet today there is nothing to see at ground level. The land is under tillage, and whatever defined this space has long since vanished into the soil.

The enclosure first appears on the first-edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1843, where it is shown as a rectangular area outlined by trees, suggesting a deliberate planting rather than a field boundary or defensive structure. By the time the revised edition was produced in 1904 to 1905, it had disappeared from the cartographic record entirely, indicating that whatever remained above ground had been cleared or had simply ceased to register as significant within a few decades. The site likely had some connection to Barn Demesne, the landed estate in whose territory it sits, and may have been an ornamental or functional landscape feature associated with that property. Its true nature remains unresolved. What brought it back to attention was aerial photography: cropmarks, the faint differential in how crops grow over buried features, revealed its rectangular outline clearly on photographs taken in July 1970 and again in May 1977. Cropmarks form when buried walls, ditches, or other disturbances affect soil drainage and nutrient levels, causing crops above them to ripen at slightly different rates and so trace, from the air, outlines invisible to anyone standing in the field.
