Enclosure, Blanchvillestown, Co. Kilkenny

In a tilled field in Blanchvillestown, County Kilkenny, an ancient enclosure lies completely invisible at ground level, its presence betrayed only from above.

The oval outline, roughly 50 metres north to south and 66 metres east to west, shows up as a cropmark on satellite imagery, the kind of faint botanical signal that has been quietly rewriting the map of Irish archaeology for decades. Cropmarks form when buried features such as ditches or banks alter how soil retains moisture, causing the crops growing above them to ripen or wither at slightly different rates, producing ghostly outlines that only become legible when viewed from height, and at the right time of year.

The site was identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère, who spotted the telltale oval in satellite imagery, including Google Earth footage dated 24 March 2023. The enclosure is defined by a fosse, a term for a ditch typically dug as a boundary or defensive feature, approximately two metres wide, which traces the perimeter of the oval. A further detail complicates the picture: an old field boundary, running roughly north-northeast to south-southwest and recorded on the revised Ordnance Survey six-inch map, once cut across the southern portion of the enclosure before being levelled at some later point. That a relatively recent field division was laid out without apparent awareness of the earlier boundary beneath it is a reminder of how thoroughly such features can vanish from both the landscape and local memory. The enclosure's date and purpose remain uncharacterised, though oval enclosures of this type are a recurring feature of the Irish countryside, associated variously with early medieval settlement, ritual use, or agricultural activity across a broad span of prehistory and history.
