No earthwork survives, no raised bank or hollow marks the spot. What gives it away is the crop itself: during a dry summer, the differential moisture retained by buried ditches causes the plants above them to grow fractionally taller and greener, tracing the outline of a long-vanished structure in the ripening grain. This is what a cropmark is, and it is how this particular site came to light at all.

The enclosure was identified in satellite imagery captured on 14 July 2018 via Google Earth Pro, by researchers Jean-Charles Caillère and Simon Dowling. What they found is an irregular oval shape, roughly 40 metres along its northwest to southeast axis and about 27 metres across. The irregularity of its outline is itself a small detail worth noting: perfectly circular ringforts are common in Ireland, but asymmetric enclosures can suggest different origins or functions, whether settlement, animal management, or ritual use. No excavation has taken place, so its date and purpose remain open questions. What makes the find more intriguing still is that a second, larger enclosure was also identified as a cropmark approximately 130 metres to the east, raising the possibility that the two features are related, perhaps part of a broader pattern of early activity in this part of Kilkenny.
