Enclosure, Castlelost, Co. Westmeath

Beneath the fields of Castlelost in County Westmeath, something circular is buried.

It does not announce itself above ground. No earthwork rises from the grass, no stones protrude from the soil. The only way to see it is from the air, and even then only under the right conditions, when a dry summer draws contrasting colours from the earth and the crop above betrays what lies beneath.

What appears in aerial photography is a cropmark, roughly circular in shape and approximately 46 metres in diameter. Cropmarks form when buried features, whether ditches, walls, or banks, affect the moisture available to growing plants above them. Ditches retain more water and produce lusher, darker growth; compacted or stony subsurface features have the opposite effect, leaving paler, more stressed lines in the crop. The result, invisible at ground level, can be read clearly from above. The enclosure at Castlelost was identified in Google Earth imagery captured on 28 June 2018, a date that falls within the dry summer conditions typically most productive for this kind of discovery. A roughly circular enclosure of around 46 metres across is a form consistent with a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval enclosed settlement in Ireland, though without excavation the date and function of this particular feature cannot be confirmed.

The site sits in a townland whose name carries its own historical weight. Castlelost takes its name from a medieval castle, long since gone, associated with the de Lacy family and later lost to time and landscape change, a fate this buried enclosure appears to share. That a further undocumented feature should emerge here from aerial photographs, centuries after the more prominent monuments faded, is quietly fitting.
