Enclosure, Ceathrú An Fheirtéaraigh, Co. Kerry

About 250 metres back from the sea-cliffs south of Clogher Head, on ground that is too waterlogged to be much use for farming, sits a small circular enclosure that is easy to miss and harder to explain.

It measures only 3.1 to 3.3 metres across, making it too compact to have served as a farmstead or a significant place of shelter. What gives it a degree of structural seriousness is the arrangement surrounding it: a low earthen and stone bank nearly three metres wide and up to three-quarters of a metre high, and just outside that, a fosse, which is a shallow ditch dug to define and defend a boundary, running almost two metres wide and up to 30 centimetres deep. There is a causewayed entrance at the north, where the fosse is bridged to allow access, and a possible second causeway to the south.

The site was recorded as part of J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, Corca Dhuibhne, a body of work that catalogued hundreds of features across this densely layered landscape. The enclosure at Ceathrú an Fheirtéaraigh, which translates roughly as the quarter-land of Ferriter, sits in a region associated with the Ferriter family, a Hiberno-Norman dynasty who became deeply Gaelicised over the medieval period. The date and precise function of this particular enclosure remain unresolved. Its small diameter rules out most domestic interpretations and nudges it towards ritual or boundary-marking uses, though that is speculation the archaeology does not fully support. What the site does offer is context: to its west lie the ghostly outlines of field fences that predate even the second edition of the Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting a landscape that was being divided, managed, and abandoned in layers well before any modern agricultural pattern took hold.
