Enclosure, Cloonaghmore, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Cloonaghmore in County Mayo, an enclosure sits quietly in the landscape, recorded and classified but not yet fully explained.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common and least understood monument types in rural Ireland. The term covers a wide range of features, from prehistoric circular earthworks and early medieval farmstead boundaries to later field systems, and without further detail it is difficult to say precisely what function this particular example served or when it was built. That ambiguity is itself part of what makes such sites worth noticing. Mayo is a county dense with archaeological remains, many of them still awaiting the kind of systematic documentation that would let them tell a clearer story.

Cloonaghmore is a small townland, and like many in the west of Ireland its ground holds layers of human activity reaching back thousands of years. The broader region saw settlement from the Neolithic period onward, and the boglands and upland margins that characterise much of this part of Mayo have preserved earthworks and field boundaries that would long since have been ploughed away in more intensively farmed landscapes. An enclosure in this context might mark the remains of a ringfort, the most typical form of early medieval rural settlement in Ireland, essentially a circular area defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used to protect a farmstead and its livestock. Or it might be something older or more specialised entirely. Without excavation or detailed survey, the category remains open.
