Enclosures
In the townland of Cloonalassan in County Kerry, an enclosure sits in the landscape, noted on the archaeological record but largely silent about its own past.
Enclosures of this kind, defined areas bounded by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, appear across Ireland in considerable numbers and date from a wide range of periods, from the prehistoric through to the early medieval. Some enclosed farmsteads, some had ritual functions, and many resist easy classification. The fact that this one has been formally recorded as a monument means it was considered significant enough to preserve in the national inventory, even if its story has not yet been told in full.
