Enclosure, Cooleagh, Co. Tipperary

In a field in Cooleagh, County Tipperary, a circular ghost sits in the grass.

The enclosure here has been levelled, its original form worn down over centuries of agricultural use, yet the ground still refuses to entirely forget it. A low bank and scarp, no more than 34 centimetres high at its tallest external point and roughly four metres wide, traces out a roughly circular area somewhere between 50 and 60 metres across from north to south and 56 metres east to west. That a feature so thoroughly reduced can still be read in the landscape is part of what makes it quietly compelling.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, typically associated with early medieval settlement, though the term covers a broad range of possible uses across a long span of prehistory and history. They are essentially defined areas, usually ringforts when associated with habitation, bounded by earthen banks, ditches, or both. What makes the Cooleagh example particularly interesting is its wider context. A concentric enclosure, a type where one ring sits inside another, lies approximately 120 metres to the south-south-east, and an earthwork of a different character sits immediately to the south. The clustering of such features in close proximity suggests this gentle south-facing slope in the undulating Tipperary countryside was a place of some organised significance, though precisely what that significance was remains unresolved. A telegraph pole now stands three metres beyond the base of the bank in the south-south-east quadrant, a small collision of the ancient and the modern that is easy to overlook but somehow sums up the archaeology of ordinary farmland rather well.
