Enclosure, Corralough, Co. Galway

Most ancient enclosures announce themselves with some surviving drama, a raised bank, a hollow, a line of stones.

The one at Corralough in north County Galway offers almost none of that. What remains is a partial arc of earthen bank running from the eastern to the southern side of an irregular roughly oval shape, measuring around twenty-five metres on its longer axis and nineteen on its shorter. The rest has vanished entirely, leaving modern field boundaries pressing in against the western and northern edges where the monument once continued.

Enclosures of this kind, low earthen rings or partial rings defined by a bank and sometimes a ditch, are among the most common and least understood features of the Irish archaeological landscape. They could represent the remains of a ringfort, a type of farmstead typical of the early medieval period, or something considerably older. At Corralough the irregularity of the shape and the poor state of preservation make it difficult to say with any confidence. The surrounding undulating grassland gives few additional clues, and the field system that now occupies the western and northern approaches has almost certainly erased whatever further evidence might once have existed at the surface.

What makes this particular site quietly interesting is precisely how little survives. It sits at the far end of the spectrum from the well-documented, well-visited monuments that tend to dominate discussions of Irish prehistory. The partial bank at Corralough is a reminder that most of what people once built, farmed, and organised their lives around has been worn back to almost nothing by centuries of agriculture and weather, leaving only faint and ambiguous traces in the grass.
