Enclosure, Kedrah, Co. Tipperary

On the crest of a broad, flat-topped hill in County Tipperary, an irregularly shaped enclosure sits quietly under pasture, its earthen and stone bank still defining a rough oval roughly 34 to 38 metres across.

What makes it quietly peculiar is not just what it is, but where it sits and how it behaves: the northern side of the bank visibly kinks, as though adjusting itself to acknowledge the eastern bank of a neighbouring moated site just three metres away to the north-west. A moated site is a medieval feature, typically a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled or dry ditch, associated with rural settlement from around the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. The two earthworks occupy the same hilltop in close proximity, their banks in quiet conversation across a narrow strip of ground.

The enclosure itself is defined by a bank of earth and stone, between 1.7 and 1.8 metres wide at the crest and up to 3.7 metres at the base, with a slight external fosse, or ditch, running outside it. The north, south, and west sides remain reasonably well preserved, and the concentration of stone towards the crest of the bank suggests there may once have been a wall sitting on top of the earthen core. The east sector tells a different story: the bank there appears to have been largely levelled, with only a slight rise indicating where it once ran. No entrance is visible, though the degraded state of the eastern side means one could easily have been lost there. A dense growth of nettles in the interior and along the base of the eastern bank may point to a former fosse, since nettles tend to thrive in disturbed or nutrient-rich ground associated with old earthworks. A shallow depression outside the western sector is likely the result of small-scale quarrying at some point in the past. The enclosure appeared on an aerial photograph taken in April 1974, which helped confirm the outline of features no longer obvious at ground level.
