It is the kind of position that people in early medieval Ireland chose deliberately, and the faint trace of a circular enclosure here suggests someone did exactly that. What remains is almost nothing: a barely perceptible outline in flat grassland, the earthwork having been levelled so thoroughly that only the ghost of a curve in the ground marks it out.

Circular enclosures of this kind were a common feature of the Irish landscape during the early medieval period, used variously as farmsteads, ecclesiastical enclosures, or simply as bounded spaces whose original purpose is now difficult to recover without excavation. At Kilbraugh, the western boundary of the enclosure was once defined by a field boundary running northwest to southeast, which appears on older mapping. That boundary has since been removed, and its replacement, a wire fence, offers no clue to what lay beneath. The working assumption is that the enclosure was levelled at the same time the old field boundary came down, the two features erased together. What gives the site additional interest is its context: a ringfort sits 165 metres to the west, and a second enclosure lies 180 metres to the southwest, suggesting this particular patch of upland was meaningfully occupied rather than casually settled.
