Enclosure, Knockaderry, Co. Wicklow

At the soggy margin of a stream in Knockaderry, County Wicklow, the ground holds the faint memory of a structure that has spent centuries slowly sinking back into the earth.

What remains is a slight raised platform, roughly 32 metres across, sitting on level ground where the soil shades into marsh. To the south, a fosse, a defensive ditch cut around an enclosed area, still traces its arc with enough clarity to measure: about three metres wide. It is the kind of site that rewards patience and a dry week.
