Enclosure, Knocknamena Commons, Co. Tipperary

On the upland commons of Knocknamena in County Tipperary, something is missing.

A large earthwork sits on a south-east-facing slope overlooking a mountain valley, and while it was once a complete circle, only half of it remains. A road and a field boundary have between them sliced through the monument, leaving a semicircular arc of bank and ditch that reads, in the landscape, more like a fragment of something forgotten than a structure in its own right.

What survives is still substantial. The remaining arc stretches roughly 52 metres on a south-east to north-west axis and 60 metres east to west, enclosed by a bank about five metres wide with an external fosse, a ditch running along the outer face, of similar width. The bank stands just 25 centimetres above the interior ground surface but rises to around 70 centimetres on its outer side, giving a modest but distinct profile. The fosse reaches about 30 centimetres in depth. Together, bank and fosse are the classic arrangement of an enclosure, a form found widely across Ireland and associated broadly with prehistoric or early medieval use, though the function of any individual example is rarely straightforward to determine. This one faces south-east across rising upland ground, with higher terrain pressing in from the north. No entrance feature is visible in what remains, which may simply mean the original entrance fell in the section now destroyed by road and field boundary.

The two features that cut across the site, a road running roughly east to west and a field boundary on a north-south axis, tell their own story about how landscapes accumulate over time, with later generations laying out routes and boundaries without much regard for what lay beneath. The monument has been worn down and subdivided, but the surviving arc, traced through the ground from north-west around through north to south-south-east, still describes the ghost of a circle on a hillside above a quiet valley.
